Note - this role will be distributed, with occasional attendance at our London or Bristol studios required.

Brief Description of the Role

This is a junior level role, dedicated to supporting Charcoalblue’s theatre consultancy and acoustics teams on business development initiatives in the UK.

The Business Development Assistant will directly report to Gary Sparkes, Partner (UK). You will also work closely with other senior management team members. This role will sit within the wider Business Support Team function, so you will collaborate closely as part of this globally based team on some day to day tasks. Generally, you will communicate with stakeholders at varying levels within the Charcoalblue team.

As you grow in the role, you will be instrumental in supporting the development of Charcoalblue’s UK theatre consultancy and acoustics services, as we continue to grow these business units. As this is a new role, there is opportunity to develop this role in line with your own aspirations assuming they align with our business needs.

Key Duties
You will support the local UK Principals and Partners as required, on a range of duties including:

Day to Day Responsibilities

  • Leading on the project bids for new work in the UK, Europe and Middle East, including client communications to establish the brief, coordination, creation, submission and follow up of bid documentation, and associated communication with external stakeholder peers.
  • ​Supporting the UK Partners & Principals on refining and delivering on our Business Development strategy
  • Engaging with local, national, and international architects and theatre companies on business development projects
  • Managing Charcoalblue’s communications with clients via email, telephone, and website/social media as required
  • Responding to client enquiries about company services in a timely, friendly and informative manner
  • Providing support and liaising with the wider global business development team as required
  • Assisting on Business Development report writing, data gathering and system development as required
  • Communicating with local conference providers on sponsorship opportunities, negotiations and deliverables
  • Managing Charcoalblue’s social media accounts (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) for UK theatre consultancy and acoustics; carrying out updates alongside other Business Development team members to ensure a coordinated approach where appropriate
  • Developing, monitoring, updating and maintaining our Customer Relationship Management (CRM) System (Insightly); providing simple data analysis from the system as required
  • Asset management: looking after ongoing internal projects, such as an annual audit/update of the UK team CVs, project cut sheets, document template refreshes, and other project assets to support bid documentation and other client requirements
  • Assisting in the creation of graphical materials and documents using InDesign
  • Supporting on, and coordinating an editorial team for Thought Leadership
  • Supporting on associated marketing initiatives as required.
  • Developing a good knowledge regarding priority sectors, such as market routes and trends to enable Charcoalblue to improve on its effectiveness in service delivery

Additional Responsibilities

  • Minute taking for relevant Business Development meetings
  • ​Assisting on and coordinating Business Development general activities, including meeting scheduling, organising BD related events, updating calendars, and ad hoc research
  • Assisting with Public Relations (PR) related activity, including monitoring the progress of project opening dates, publicity and press releases
  • Engaging widely with company values, social responsibly and environmental commitment and ensuring this is routinely embedded in all external facing literature and documentation
  • Identifying, sharing and communicating with new business leads for the organisation, as applicable
  • Upholding the quality standards of Charcoalblue in line our ISO:9001 standard Quality Management System.
  • Undertaking continual improvement within work practices through internal audits. 
  • Other ad hoc general administrative business development tasks as required.

Key Skills and Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
A Bachelor level degree in business management, marketing, arts administration or other relevant field plus 1+ years’ industry experience in one of these fields; 

Or in lieu of a degree, 3+ years' demonstrable experience of professional business development within an SME.

Professional Experience

  • Business development experience in an events, architecture or construction related environment, or other relevant field.
  • Participation in business development and marketing campaigns/initiatives.
  • Demonstrable experience using design software such as InDesign or Photoshop.
  • Demonstrable experience using Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software e.g. Insightly.
  • High level of IT literacy (Google docs, Windows 10, Outlook, Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat).


  • Experience working with a global team across different time zones.
  • Experience of working as part of a distributed, international team.
  • An interest in design and delivery of construction projects.
  • An interest in the performing arts, events or experiential spaces.

Employment Details

We operate a flexible working hours policy and recognise the importance of the work/life balance. 

The role is being offered as a permanent contract at 40 hours per week, however as part of our flexible working policy we are open to considering a 32 hour contract. If applicable, please state your preference in your covering letter.

Although this is a UK focused role, as an international organisation, the needs of the business are as such that this role may require some flexibility from time to time in working hours to facilitate project demands and to maintain support across our global entities’ varying time-zones. 

Working hours patterns will be discussed in more detail at the interview stages. Charcoalblue does not provide for the payment of overtime - we trust that you will work flexibly within your contracted hours to protect your work/life balance and support the needs of the company.

The role is subject to a three-month probationary period. 


We work in a distributed model, meaning you will work mostly from your home or other place of your choosing. Team meetings and in-person catch ups will generally happen in our London or Bristol locations once COVID restrictions are lifted. There will also be the option to work from one of our UK studios at that time if preferred. 

Some travel may be required occasionally, with notice. 

Salary Range
£24,000-£29,000 gross per annum, based on a 40-hour week. Please state your salary expectations in your covering letter in line with your experience. 

Annual Leave
For a 40-hour per week contract, you will receive 20 days’ annual leave minimum per annum* plus statutory Bank Holidays and additional working days between Christmas and New Year when our studios are closed.

*We are currently trialing a new ‘unlimited leave’ annual leave policy so with prior arrangement there may be the opportunity to benefit from some additional days’ leave. More information will be provided to candidates reaching the interview stages.

Charcoalblue operates a bonus scheme which you will benefit from following successful completion of a three-month probationary period. Please note that this is subject to the Partnership’s performance year on year and is not guaranteed.

From your start date, we will contribute to your home broadband and give you a monthly contribution towards your home utilities to enable you to work from home effectively in line with our distributed working model. 

We will provide you with a laptop and other IT peripherals whilst in our employment.

On successful completion of your probationary period, you will be eligible to join our employers’ auto-enrolment pension scheme. 

Following your probationary period, you will also receive two free theatre/ live performance tickets per month to enable you to immerse yourself in our industry as far as possible. 

At the end of your first year’s employment, you will receive free life insurance up to our policy limits.

At the end of your second year’s employment, you (and spouse/immediate dependents if applicable) will be eligible to join our private medical healthcare cover scheme (currently with AXA Health).
